Initial research-
Bournville - is a model village on the south side of Birmingham, England, best known for its connections with the Cadbury family and chocolate – including a dark chocolate bar branded Bournville. It is also a ward within the council constituency of Selly Oak and home to the Bournville Centre for Visual Arts. Research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has claimed that it is "one of the nicest places to live in Britain".

Further research;
originally the area that was to become Bournville consisted of a few scattered farmsteads and cottages, linked by winding country lanes, with the only visual highlight being the Georgian built "Bournbrook Hall" on south side Bournville lane.
The 18th-century Bournbrook Hall stood on a rising hill across Bournville Lane from the Cadbury factory and overlooked the valley of the Bourne.
-This small stream runs west to east through the factory site. The hall was a large 3-storey building built in a neo-classical style with extensive grounds which were bought by Cadbury's and the hall was subsequently demolished.
There was another building also known as Bournbrook Hall. Now better known as Selly Manor, it stood on Selly Hill near the junction of Bournbrook Road and Rookery Road.
The half-timbered manor house, which had been built in the 14th century, was almost derelict by the time George Cadbury arrived in the area and in danger of being lost. He had it dismantled, restored and re-erected in 1916 on Bournville Green as a public museum. - Grade II Listed building

No.222 Mary Vale Road was the first house to be built on the estate with the shops on the corner of Linden Road following three years later. These were restored in 2009. The houses here were set back by front gardens and had generous rear vegetable gardens. The roads of the estate were lined with trees. Cadbury wanted to give workers a better environment than the slums of the town centre and to avoid the speculative overcrowding that was beginning to take place in nearby Selly Oak.

What I particularly like about this image is how the footpath has been raised/made around the tree to allow it to grow.
Bournville Lane raised foot path, showing preservation of trees.
My initial ideas where to look at Bournville as an area, especially the houses, however, I feel that the area as one it too large, thus I will narrow my ideas down, as I was also interested in the amount of green area there is in bournville I have decided that I'm going to focus on the area of bournville village green.
In a workshop in video and sound we looked at areas around Bournville and unpicked things that shouldn't be there/ things or items that don't comply with ' the utopia' way of life set up by George Cadbury, in the short video I made, I found tiny little paper notes scattered over the trees, I believe these were done by the children at the local primary school...
After doing further research I found these few images that once again don't comply with the Cadbury view of 'Utopia' however, I feel they do make the village green look more contemporary.
these illustrations show various changes/ modifications made to Bournville green,most of which use lighting.
I then found these images;
I like the playful use of contemporary lighting against the rustic aesthetics of Bournville, I also like the use of colour and monochrome in the images, these of course have been digitally modified as Bournville has very strict planning permission, but this got me thinking what if I could modify just a small area of Bournville, even just for an hour, what would/could I turn it into?
Ideas for Bournville;
On the top of the not allowed list;takeaway shop,
off-licence,
could I look at the theoretical aspect, why do people follow rules? why do we have rules?
Going back to Bournville Green...
After going back to Bournville, I thought of where I could create my pop up venue, although I want to create a pop up venue, I don't want it to look out of place in Bournville, that's when I started thinking what if I used the rest house as my venue? I know it can't be rented or booked out and the people who run it definitely would not let me use it, so how about I make my own? (miniature scale) decorate it to the exact out side of the rest house, but make the inside look like a functional chip shop? would this take too much time? maybe I could digitally create whole chip shop/pub idea?
Create a sign/banner for pop up venue;
Ye Olde Pub, Ye Olde Fish & Chip Shop...
Digitally produce an image with banner above rest house,
Script fonts;
Out of all these fonts I prefer fonts number 2 and 3 the most, I feel these two will be going forward to create my pop up venue's sign.
Now to think of a name for the actual venue.
\
When thinking of a different name I decided I actually quit liked the 'Ye Olde' text idea as I like how it reflects Bournvilles' rustic charm.
I decided that I want to make a fish and chip shop;

I took these pictures of the rest house/ shop area, so you can see the banner and sign post outside.

I decided that I want to make a fish and chip shop;
Fish and chip shop background information;
Fish and chips is a take-away food that consists of battered fish, commonly Atlantic cod or haddock, and deep-fried chips, sometimes accompanied by mushy peas. It originated in the United Kingdom from battered fish introduced by Spanish and Portuguese immigrants.
Fish and chips became a stock meal among the working classes in the United Kingdom as a consequence of the rapid development of trawl fishing in the North Sea, and the development of railways which connected the ports to major industrial cities during the second half of the 19th century, which meant that fresh fish could be rapidly transported to the heavily populated areas.Deep-fried fish was first introduced into Britain during the 17th century by Jewish refugees from Portugal and Spain, and is derived from pescado frito. In 1860, the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Joseph Malin.
Deep-fried chips (slices or pieces of potato) as a dish may have first appeared in Britain in about the same period: the Oxford English Dictionary notes as its earliest usage of "chips" in this sense the mention in Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities (published in 1859): "Husky chips of potatoes, fried with some reluctant drops of oil".
Fish and Chips in the Modern day;
The modern fish-and-chip shop ("chippy" or "chipper" in modern British slang) originated in the United Kingdom, although outlets selling fried food occurred commonly throughout Europe. Early fish-and-chip shops had only very basic facilities. Usually these consisted principally of a large cauldron of cooking fat, heated by a coal fire. During World War II fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing.Popularity;
The dish became popular in wider circles in London and South East England in the middle of the 19th century (Charles Dickens mentions a "fried fish warehouse" in Oliver Twist, first published in 1838), while in the north of England a trade in deep-fried chipped potatoes developed. The first chip shop stood on the present site of Oldham's Tommyfield Market.It remains unclear exactly when and where these two trades combined to become the fish-and-chip shop industry we know. Mr Lees pioneered the concept in the North of England, in Mossley, in 1863.
The concept of a fish restaurant was introduced by Samuel Isaacs (born 1856 in Whitechapel, London; died 1939 in Brighton, Sussex) who ran a thriving wholesale and retail fish business throughout London and the South of England in the latter part of the 19th century. Isaacs' first restaurant opened in London in 1896 serving fish and chips, bread and butter, and tea for nine pence,[16] and its popularity ensured a rapid expansion of the chain.

I took these pictures of the rest house/ shop area, so you can see the banner and sign post outside.
This what I created using photoshop;
close up of the sign
I hand painted every individual letter, I made the text more rustic/Victorian looking and more 3-d with the use of the highlights, mid-tone and shadows by using different colour in the same spectrum, I kept the same colour theme that is already used on the carillon centre. however, I do feel the image looks pixilated.
I was originally going to attempt to re-photograph the centre of a night time, or try to over expose my images on my camera, but regardless of this I don't think photoshoping my images is the way forward.
Other aspects I could look at:
Act out the running of a chip shop, how could I do this?;
Borrow a gazebo? and erect it in Bournville for an hour or two, (lets try not to get caught)
Hang banner from gazebo
Buy chips from up the road and hand them out
Deep fat fyer? hook it up to maple road and cook there
Create a uniform to wear in the chip shop,
Create menus for the pop up chippy.
When would be the best time? as it's getting dark, dusk sets in.
All this could be used in video, erecting of gazebo, hanging
Animation?
Creating my menu...
I wanted something simple so I used only a selection of items that I would be able to cook myself using a deep-fat fryer.
First menu
Menu with slight alterations
Switching the back ground
Further alterations...
Out of my two designs I think I prefer the lighter simpler one of the two, it would be easier to print and more cost effective.
I've asked for permission of the site manager at our Maple road campus to open my functioning pop-up Fish and chips shop from the canteen area.
I will set my gazebo up where the white door is and run the chip shop from inside the premisses, students from the campus will have full access and will have seating available for them to use.
My Uniform;
Logo;
I want to use the child like fish logo but keep the old style text.
I want my logo to also have a circular format, I believe this will add shape to it. I have created this cicle with dashes so it can be stitched on to my overall.
So firstly I positioned the fish in the middle of the circle logo shape, I then created each letter again by painting them, I then warped them so they curve around.
I don't actually think the fish image and my text go well together but I like it regardless
What I will need for my Fish and chip shop;
Pop;
B&M Stores;
6 cans of diet coke, regular coke, orange Tango and Pepsi - £1.69 each
6 bottles of water- £

Ok, so now I won't need to use the gazebo as I'll be using the canteen area at Maple road which is a much better set up for my work.
Footage for my video;
I'd like my footage to contain;
- Setting up the chippy, setting up deep fat fryer, table leaflets
- Record first customer being served, putting chip in deep fat fryer.
- Fast-forwarding of customers being served
- Closing up shop.
The students at the university had also broke up for marking week, (which I was unaware of) so there wasn't any one I could get to buy chips from me/ give chips to, so thankfully my boyfriend stepped in and acted like someone buying chips from me, this is the footage I got based on all these circumstances.
Video;
Things to think about /re-do;
story board ideas.
Menus -laminated
Advertisements- stick posters up behind canteen
Look at takeaways- dixi chicken, McDonalds, pizza shops, 'low end greasy' establishments. (bright colourful)
Shots that can show Bournville green, looking through windows? try various shots.
Buy chip shop paper, (incase more then one take is needed)
Volunteers (get people to come- students form level? other levels?)Arrange in advance
Ask for further permission get mains tested, use actual equipment.
Include bournville in the name of chip shop - bournville chippy,
Shutters that separate canteen, get them open?- use as opening shot (sign/banner above)
Looking at other establishments;
dixy chicken;
Menu
I have looked into Dixy chicken as their prices are really cheap, they use bright/bold and colourful advertising methods, their images are interesting (cooked food photographed and displayed)
I think i'm going to have to change my font from an old fashioned script to a bold newer Helvetica font to match my bright images and colours.
Names...
I decided that the name of my chip shops isn't that strong and it should include 'Bournville' somewhere to further incorporate my idea.here's a few website I found with common/humours names for a fish and chip shop;

Initial ideas;

Bournville Plaice (commonly used)
Menus;
Menu boards;
These are the two menu boards I have created for my Chip shop, I have used the cadbury colour purple to further entwine my idea with the area of Bournville, as of yet I still haven't thought of a name for my Fish and Chip shop, this is why the top section on both Boards is still blank.
after consultation I found the text was too conservative (Times new Roman) so I fiddled around with loads of fonts but couldn't find one I liked, I then collected various take-away leaflets and menus and searched for text I liked in them, but still now luck I thn found this photo software called 'inkscape' and I found text that I much preferred;
I wanted my text to have a bubbly round feel to it, but not too much like comic sans- the font I che to use is called 'Dokchampa'
So My capital Letter would look like this;
I also decided that I want my 'name' in a different font, sticking with the traditional Bournville feel I choose Georgia in italic.; I have also named my pop-up shop "A Plaice In Bournville" using a subtle play on words.
Final Menu Ideas;

I had wanted to use a yellow/orange colour in connection to the takeaway box however, on the white background the image was difficult to see, I then added black ink and got these two images.
I think this is my best Image, the yellow has almost completely faded and the image is clearer to see.
Story Board;
I felt it was important to story board my idea for my final as I didn't want to spend to long figuring out how to shoot things or what to shot, here is my story board comprising of 10 shots I'd like in my video.
My presentation for CHC;
in the presentation I gave a brief introduction to Bournville, I outlined what I want to look at (theory behind my work) I briefly introduced George Cadbury and what his believes are in relation to his quaker believes, I outlined his idea for his utopia, and I have looked at class in Bournville and I established that Bournville is ideal for the middle-class.I have also listed the references i used to source my material.
